Fortune Society, Center for Community Alternatives, El Diario, and Others Weigh In For A.8793

Major statewide organizations have come out this week with strong statements of support for The Public Defense Act of 2009 (A.8793), in the wake of its quick passage through the Judiciary and Codes committees of the State Assembly. Read the statements below (links are in PDF):
Other organizations are encouraged to submit statements of support, and should contact the Campaign for details.

Also, check out today's editorial (PDF) in El Diario, "An Inadequate Defense." Here's an excerpt:

"Poor people who stand accused pay the price for an inadequate or incompetent defense. With the poverty rates among Latinos and African-Americans, it is these same communities that are disproportionately affected by a broken system."
