Star-Gazette Supports the Independent Public Defense Commission

The Elmira Star-Gazette editorialized strongly for the Independent Public Defense Commission this last weekend! After discussing statutory provisions that were intended to improve public defense services but have failed to do so, the editorial concludes about the IPDC:

"It's a sound investment that gives taxpayers more oversight of the program and stands to rid the state of the silly use-it-or-lose-it policy now in effect.

Closer scrutiny, wiser spending, better legal services for the poor. It's a better system than the current one.
"

And there is more. The editorial noted that State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli voiced support for the IPDC. Having him state his long-standing support publicly gives a real boost to our efforts!

Meanwhile, we continue to ask legislators to sign on to the Public Defense Act of 2009.
